Habitat Opening! February 11, 2012 @11AM
|
Greetings!
Turpentine Creek will open it 31st large, natural enclosure (habitat) next Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at 11AM. This habitat is certainly a milestone in the refuge's progress. We finished the 1/2 mile loop with thirty habitats and now are opening a three-habitat "pod" which is separate from all the others. The lucky cats to enjoy freedom are Ziggy and Tigger from Missouri and Brody who is also from Missouri. Ziggy and Tigger were to become homeless when their previous owner found himself in a pickle. The city nearby annexed his land and forced the two tigers out. Turpentine creek staff members have picked up cats for this same reason several times through the years. Brody's fate was sealed when he was purchased at an auction in Missouri for $175! The lady who purchased him did so to prohibit him from being purchased by anyone else. She soon found him to be unruly and had to live outside. The surrounding town folk did not want a lion nearby and made several threats aimed at both the lion and the family with whom he lived. The family was happy to send him to the refuge where he could live out his life without being threatened. If you have not been at the refuge to witness a big cat walk on grass and run and play in a wide open space for the first time, this is your chance. Arrive early and enjoy an experience of a lifetime. Bring a friend!
Ziggy, Tigger G, and Brody wait patiently for Feb. 11 to arrive!
Check out the Turpentine Creek Video of the Week by clicking on the play button. Ziggy is Cat of the Week! On Saturday, April 12, TCWR went to Fairview, Missouri, to rescue two adult tigers. Ziggy, a 7 year old male, and Tigger, a 9 year old female. The couple had owned the cats since they were cubs. Both tigers were purchased from the same breeder for $500 each. Though tigers do not make pets, Ziggy and Tigger were well cared for by their previous owners. The previous owners were moving because the city nearby annexed their land. Both Ziggy and Tigger were declawed, but neither had been fixed. Tigger had given birth to cubs in January, 2008, all of which died. On April 16, our veterinarians came to examine both tigers and Ziggy was neutered at that time. On May 31, just six weeks after their arrival, Tigger G surprised us with the birth of two healthy cubs, BB King and Mack.
