Cat of the Week
Haley
Haley was among the 21 Big Cats that Turpentine Creek rescued from Safari Park when the breeding facility went out of business. This is one of the largest rescues that TCWR had ever been involved, the retrieval of cats spanning a three-month period. All of the cats were hungry and many needed medical attention. Haley accompanied her sister Whitney and brother Jerry during the recovery. Haley suffered from a broken leg that has since been amputated. |
Antics in a Habitat By Kellyn Kearney/staff biologist
Besides the obvious advantages to the drop in temperatures from over 100 degrees to the 70s, it makes all the animals extra active. Having been kept pretty non-active over the summer due to the hot weather, this break from the heat has caused a lot of the cats to be super playful. One cat in particular has caused a stir: Detroit. Detroit's our youngest cat out in the habitats and has a ton of energy so he usually puts on a very good show for people. Well, this week consisted of him prancing up and down his habitat (which is no easy task as it's a large hill to begin with) carrying his toys around with him. He'd bring up to the top of his habitat his brand new boomer ball, the Jungle Ball (about 40 lbs), wrestle with it, let it go, and chase it all the way back down the hill. He'd do this for a bit before moving on to his next boomer ball, a beat up old Mega ball (about 70lbs!) which he would drag all the way up the hill only to chase it back down again and run around like a crazy tiger. Then he'd go back to the Jungle Ball and play in his pool a bit with it. He then even started going after his pool, which of course is NOT a toy, but oh did he ever believe it was! Pushin' and pullin' at it; Climbing in and trying to rock it back and forth (what a naughty tiger!) But he was super cute so it was hard to get too upset with him. And a couple of times, towards the end of the day, I even caught him finally trying to get some rest by using his Jungle ball as a pillow. It wasn't a very sturdy pillow but it worked none the less. So definitely try to stop into the Refuge this fall as all of the animals are bound to put on a good show for you as they're so excited about the temperature cool down! (as a side note, all boomer balls were donated to us. Visit the boomer ball website at Boomerball.com if you'd like to help us supply our cats with some fun enrichment!)
Can you believe this guy would cause any trouble? |
