Greetings!
Things at Turpentine Creek are moving along. While in the process of rebuilding the perimeter fence we unanimously decided that we must do some habitat repair. The three habitats nearest the lodging and office were the first habitats built, way back in 1997. In anticipation of new regulations from the USDA we are rebuilding parts of these three habitats. It is nice to be ahead of the game in this regard. Although these repairs have temporarily derailed new habitat building, it won't be for long. Within the next few weeks we will be starting a new habitat for some of the tigers on tiger row. Donate to the habitat fund today. Save the date (October 29, 7-9 pm) in your calendar for Turpentine Creek's 16th Annual Howl-O-Ween Spooktacular. This weekend in Eureka 9/16: Scooting in the Ozarks Rally. All American WeekendNext weekend in Eureka 9/23: Jazz Eureka 2012. The weekend after that: 9/30: Bikes Blues and BBQ. There are a lot of things coming up soon that you might want to attend. If you are...stay with us. We are in the middle of everything! You get the animals to boot, and a nice place to sleep and rest away from the crowds. Book your room today.
See the bottom of this email for a weekday deal!
Sincerely, Scott Smith Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

Cat of the Week - Sierra
Sierra, a beautiful female Bengal tiger, was rescued in Grapevine, TX on September 5, 1998. She had been confiscated by the Texas SPCA about two months before and placed in a Grapevine Humane Society until a home was found for her. Sierra had lived on a poor diet of dog food and was in very bad condition. She had gained 70 pounds in the two months the Humane Society of Grapevine had her. The Humane Society spayed her while they had her. TCWR was located by the SPCA from our web site. They decided to give Sierra a good home at TCWR. Sierra had been declawed.

Bam Bam and His Pool!
By Jarrett Sweeley, Staff Biologist

As many of you know, Bam Bam the bear loves his pool. Recently his old pool finally gave out and sprung a leak. So we had to remove it from his enclosure to ensure he would not further damage his pool, or even his enclosure and himself. After we got the pool out it was easy to tell the Bam Bam was heartbroken. For the first day he just moped around, not being his normal playful self. However, over the next few days Bam Bam became very energetic, constantly throwing one of his big enrichment barrels around his enclosure all day and night. It was soon apparent that we needed to find him a new pool soon. Not only did he manage to keep several guest in our camping area up all night with his antics, a few of the staff members could hear him playing all night long from across the refuge! The next day we managed to find him a new pool, and he immediately calmed down, and went back to his normal behavior. I have never seen any animal here at TCWR love their enrichment as much as Bam Bam loves his pool. So next time you have a chance, come out and see him splashing around, and don't forget that we are always accepting donations to build new habitats. We can only build them as fast as we get the funding, and wouldn't it be nice to see Bam Bam running around a BIG habitat playing with his toys and pool?
