It would be easy to look at the tragedy in Ohio last week, wring our hands, and focus only on the animals who lost their lives due to the negligent actions of the owner. Its imperative we learn from this event and determine how to prevent it from happening again. More importantly, we need to recognize the "hidden heroes" who did all they could to minimize what finally occurred. These heroes include:
* The dedicated staff and "first responders" of the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds, who risked their lives in the cold, pouring rain trying to save the animals. Some of these individuals interrupted family vacations, without pay, in an attempt to minimize the loss of life.
* Dozens of wildlife refuges around the country, including Turpentine Creek, immediately responded by offering their staff and resources. Numerous employees at these facilities were on call for 48 hours, ready to provide immediate assistance.
* Thousands of individuals responded within minutes of the breaking news with financial support to offset the cost of relocating and caring for the surviving wildlife.
* All of you who support Turpentine Creek with your visits and contributions.
There is an old saying, "If you are not part of the resolution...you are the problem". Turpentine Creek has dedicated itself to being part of the resolution. For almost 20 years, we have educated the public that non-licensed ownership of wildlife is not only dangerous, but cruel to the animals. Everyday we provide a safe and healthy life-time home to hundreds of animals who have survived the vagaries of private owners. We have supported legislation to control non-regulated ownership and sale of wildlife, and will continue to do so. These ongoing initiatives could never be accomplished without your ongoing support and financial assistance.
While we would never say this is the "silver lining of the dark cloud" that affected all of us this week, but we would surely be remiss if we did not acknowledge the many heroes who do all they could to resolve and prevent this horrific event. Please help us continue our mission to prevent these tragedies with your support, for which we thank each and every one of you...our heroes.
Sincerely,
The Staff and Board of Directors
Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge
